NW52: An Ecological Trauma Informed Lens on Mental Illness

Due to scientific reductionism and a sickness model we have inherited false and incomplete narratives about why we have become so unwell mentally in our society. In the U.S. rates of disability from depression and anxiety have been rising since the 1950’s, along with suicide, and addiction, while treatment with psychoactive medications steadily rise. A trauma informed lens provides an advancement by telling a more accurate story, to see that most of the chronic mental health conditions we are medicating have early childhood trauma and adversity at their root. An ecological trauma informed lens allows us to ask a more profound question of why we are getting sick despite trauma being a part of human life that we are meant to heal from. By showing that we have an innate capacity to heal when we are supported with the conditions we evolved to thrive in, we can begin to tell a more meaningful and inspiring story that empowers us to not only heal but thrive.

2. Develop an ecological trauma informed explanation for the rise in mental illness since the 1950’s.

3. Understanding why we heal from trauma through self empowerment, community and purpose.

OMID NAIM, MD: Biography

Dr. Omid Naim is an integrative psychiatrist and mental health thought leader. After completing his Adult and Child Psychiatry residency at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Naim worked in community psychiatry, attending to high-risk foster care youth. Drawing on the emerging field of interpersonal neurobiology and integrative medicine, he established new models of psychotherapy and psychiatry at his clinic, Hope Integrative Psychiatry, where the focus is on healing trauma and promoting resilience within individuals, families, and the larger community by focusing on self empowerment, community regeneration and the need for purpose and meaning. In 2019 Dr. Naim and his wife, Alexis, established La Maida Project, where they are working to reframing the story of mental health and well-being by meeting mental health where it happens, in the places where we cultivate community and live our lives through innovative models for community to generate health naturally.
